Philippe Herreweghe

Category:dirigent, artistiek leider
Genre(s):barok, oude muziek, classicisme, romantiek, 20ste eeuw

Philippe Herreweghe was born in Ghent and managed to combine his academic studies of medicine and psychiatry at the local university with piano studies at the conservatory there. In the same period he started conducting and in 1970 he founded the Collegium Vocale Gent. Soon his unusual approach was noted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt, and they invited him to collaborate with them on their recordings of the Bach cantatas in their entirety. His lively, authentic and rhetorical approach was universally praised.

In 1977 he founded La Chapelle Royale in Paris, with a view to performing the music of the French Golden Age. Since then other ensembles have been created by him, enabling him to render separately or in synergetic alliance, an adequate and solid interpretation of a repertoire ranging across a wide gamut from the Renaissance to contemporary music.

With all those ensembles Herreweghe has managed, in the course of many years, to build up an extensive and varied discography. Forever looking for musical challenges, he has been actively involved lately in rediscovering the great symphonic repertoire from Robert Schumann to Gustav Mahler.

He is much in demand as a guest conductor by orchestras such as the Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, or the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Since 1997 he has also been serving as music director of deFilharmonie (Royal Flemish Philharmonic).

Starting with the season 2008-2009 Philippe Herreweghe was also appointed as permanent guest director of the Radio Kamer Filharmonie in the Netherlands. Because of his consistent artistic vision and his unrelenting commitment to music Herreweghe was the recipient of the following distinctions: in 1990 European Musical Personality of the Year, in 1994 the order of Officier des Arts et Lettres, in 1997 Honorary Doctor of the Catholic University of Leuven, and in 2003 the French title Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur.

In 2010, Philippe Herreweghe started his own label φ (phi) in order to give himself full artistic freedom to build up a rich and varied catalogue. The first CD, of motets by J.S.Bach (PHI-002) will be released in 2011, followed by a new recording of Bach's Mass in B minor and a recording of works by Johannes Brahms.
