Biography

Bart Jacobs (1976) studied organ with Reitze Smits and harpsichord and basso continuo with Kris Verhelst at the Lemmens Institute in Louvain (Leuven), Belgium. He completed his Masters Degree for organ with summa cum laude in 2000. In 2002 he obtained his Masters Degree for harpsichord with magna cum laude and was awarded his Organ Specialization Degree with the same distinction.

Afterwards, he took part in numerous master classes on Historical Performance Practice.

The prizes he has received at international competitions include:

In 2006: Fourth prize and Listeners’ prize at the International Musica Antiqua Organ Competition, Bruges (Belgium).
In 2008: Finalist of the Max Reger Organ Competition, Leeuwaarden (The Netherlands).
In 2009: First prize at the Schnitger Competition, Alkmaar (The Netherlands), distinguished for his “varied interpretation and great musicality”. He is the first Belgian musician ever to have received this prize.
In 2010: Third prize at the International Sweelinck Competition, Amsterdam (The Netherlands).
Since 2000, he has been organist of the choir of Brussels Cathedral with which he has recorded numerous works for organ and choir, including the complete organ works of August De Boeck en Lodewijk De Vocht.

In 2012 he was appointed titular organist at the Saint Michael and Saint Gudula Cathedral in Brussels.

As organist, Bart Jacobs is attached to the baroque orchestra Les Muffati. With this orchestra he has performed his own reconstructions of Bach’s organ concerts, played on a two manual organ with pedal.

He has performed in concert halls throughout Europe and has taken part in many recordings with renowned ensembles such as Currende, Capilla Flamenca, Flanders Recorder Quartet, Les Buffardins, Zefiro Torna, La Caccia Consort, Collegium Instrumentale Brugense, The Flemish radio choir and orchestra….

He is also co-founder of the Flemish Harpsichord Society, founded in 2006, which aims to enlarge the public’s interest in the harpsichord by organizing annual Harpsichord Days, workshops and public master classes.

Bart Jacobs teaches organ and harpsichord at the Conservatory of Mechelen (Malines) and the Academy for Music, Drama and Dance in Bornem (Antwerp).

Since 2013 he is guest lecturer in harpsichord and basso continuo at the Lemmens Institute.
