Biography
Jan De Winne studied at the conservatories of Ghent and Brussels and obtained a master's degree in musicology and art history at the University of Ghent. He specialized in historical performance practice and studied baroque flute with Barthold Kuijken.
He started his career at the VRT (Flemish Radio and Television) where he succeeded Pieter Andriessen in 1990 as producer of early music. After a few years he made the switch from programming and organising to active music making and joined several international music ensembles (Orchestre des Champs Elysées, Collegium Vocale Gent, Wiener Akademie, il Fondamento, les Agremens). As a flutist, he is fascinated by 18th century flutes, over which he not only conducts research, but from which he has made numerous copies that are played all over the world by professional colleagues.
From 2000 on, he started to concentrate on the professional development of his own ensemble il Gardellino. He participated in more than 70 recordings as soloist and chamber musician for the labels Accent, Harmonia Mundi, Accent, Ricercar, Naxos and Passacaille. Since 2004, he has been artistic director of the Passacaille record label, which he has developed with a close team of collaborators into an internationally acclaimed production company.
Since 2000, Jan De Winne has shared his passion for music with the students of the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel as a chamber music teacher and as a researcher. He is also the head of research of the early music department and research coordinator. As research coordinator he takes a sabbatical leave for the academic year 2022- 2023.
Jan De Winne teaches Baroque flute at the Paris Conservatoire CNSMDP and is the president of the Bruges Musica Antiqua Competition.
