Biography

 

The Belgian internationally acclaimed all round conductor Etienne Siebens is often asked by contemporary composers as an interpreter of their creations. He is familiar with the works of György Kurtag, Mauricio Kagel, Jonathan Harvey, Harisson Birtwistle, Philippe Boesmans, Peter Eötvös, Pierre Boulez, Luca Francesconi, Luc Brewaeys and many others.

In his own country he was the founder of the Prometheus Ensemble that earned in no time a lot of successes in the whole of Europe and was also the chief conductor of Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen where he drew  the attention on his original interpretations of classical masterpieces. He was also permanent guest conductor of Brussels Philharmonic and Artist-in-Residence of « I Solisti » (season 2011/2012).

In the Netherlands he was very successful as the principal guest conductor of  the ASKO|Schönberg Ensemble and as a guest conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, Residentieorkest, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Radio Chamber Orchestra (to name just a few). As an opera conductor he made his debut with the National Opera and with the Holland Festival. 

Etienne Siebens will be remembered for the world creation of internationally acclaimed contemporary operas like: The house taken over (Vasco Mendonça) during the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and Sawdust New York and Laika (Martijn  Padding) with the Holland Festival as well as Private View(Annelies van Parys) for Opera XXI. Some of these operas were coproduced by Lod and Transparant. The premiere of Sunken Garden (Michel van der Aa) in France marked his debut with  Opera de Lyon and  Bosch Beach (Vasco Mendonça) his debut with the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon.

During the last seasons Etienne Siebens was invited by the Festivals of Covent Garden, Adelaide, Huddersfield, Wien-Modern, Automne en Normandie, Paris (Agora-Festival), Montreux-Vevey, Warsaw Autumn, Musica Strasbourg and the Flanders Festival. 

He collaborated with such outstanding soloists as Barbara Hannigan, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, José van Dam, Christiane Stotijn, Quirine Viersen, Frank Braley, Jean-Guihen Queyras, Patricia Kopatschinskaja, Claron McFadden and Pieter Wispelwey.
