Biography
Piet Kuijken (b. 1972) studied with Jan Vermeulen, Jan Michiels, André De Groote and Menahem Pressler. He holds Higher Diplomas in both piano and chamber music from the Royal Conservatoire in Brussels, for which he was given the highest distinction. He also holds a Performer Diploma from Indiana University, where he studied with a BAEF Fellowship. He is the winner of the E. Ollin, M. Lefranck and M. Horlait-Dapsens prizes, the CERA-Young Musicians Prize in 1994, and the Schumann Concerto Competition in Bloomington.
He has been professor of piano and pianoforte at the Royal Conservatoire in Brussels since 2002 www.kcb.be and is a guest professor for the pianoforte at the Royal Conservatoire in Antwerp. He also gives regular seminars in chamber music at the Orpheus Institute in Ghent : www.orpheusinstituut.be
Piet Kuijken’s solo and chamber music career has seen him perform on the piano, harpsichord and the pianoforte in various well-known festivals and concert halls across Europe, Japan and Mexico. Many of his concerts and performances have been broadcast internationally on both radio and television.
As a solist, he has worked with various orchestras and conductors and he has played regularly with musicians such as his father, Wieland Kuijken, his uncle, Barthold Kuijken, Albrecht Breuninger, Boyan Vodenitcharov as well as with Oxalys, Roel Dieltiens and the Explorations Ensemble, the solists of the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Brussels Philharmonic, the Royal Flemish Philharmonic and the Monnaie Opera Symphony Orchestras. As a Lieder accompanist, he has worked with sopranos Olga Pasichnyk, Irmgard Arnold, Anne Cambier, Hendrickje Van Kerckhove, Yukari Nonoshita and Shihiro Bamba, and more recently with the baryton, Dietrich Henschel, with whom he continues to work regularly.
In 2013, he formed the Talisma Ensemble, together with the violinist Naaman Sluchin, focussing in particular on a classical and romantic repertoire, played on historical instruments. In 2015, Talisma expanded to become a piano trio, together with the cellist, Amy Norrington.
Piet Kuijken’s extensive discography (produced by Arcana, Fuga Libera, René Gailly, Phaedra, Channel Classics, Etcetera, Hänssler Verlag, Accent and Passacaille) includes a vast range of chamber music, from Bach to Gubaidulina, for which he was awarded the Choc du Monde de la Musique in 2000 and the Diapason d’Or in 2004. As a solist, his recordings include a double CD of works by Robert Schumann (Fuga Libera), a CD of works by Johannes Brahms (Passacaille) and a live performance of the 21st Concerto by Mozart (Denon), all recorded on the pianoforte. They were met with great acclaim by the international press and awarded a ‘5 Diapasons’, a ‘10’ in Luister, an ‘Outstanding’ in the International Record Review (IRR) and a ‘High Quality’ label.
