Reinoud Van Mechelen is a tenor, who mainly focuses on early music. In 2016, he founded his own baroque ensemble, a nocte temporis.
Biography
Reinoud Van Mechelen, born in 1987, started singing at an early age in the children's choir Clari Cantuli. At the age of eighteen, he began taking singing classes with Anne Mertens and Nicolas Achten in his hometown of Leuven. One year later, he enrolled at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he studied with Lena Lootens. After finishing his bachelor's degree, he continued studying with Dina Grossberger.
To further complement his studies, Reinoud has followed several masterclasses with, among others, Greta De Reyghere, Isabelle Desrochers, Frédérick Haas, Claire Lefiliâtre, Amain Buet, Jean-Paul Fouchécourt, François-Nicolas Geslot and Howard Crook. He has also sung the role of Plutus in Destouches' Le Carnaval et la Folie for the "Académie Baroque Européenne d'Ambronnay" under the baton of Hervé Niquet. He quickly starts performing both as a soloist and as an ensemble singer, performing with ensembles such as L'Arpeggiata, La Capilla Flamenca, Ludus Modalis, Ex Tempore, Ricercar Consort, B'rock and the European Union Baroque Orchestra. He regularly works with Scherzi Musicali, the ensemble of his former teacher Nicolas Achten. His recordings have been very well received by the press.
In 2014, he first performed the role of the evangelist in J.S. Bach's St. John's Passion with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, a role which he would go on to perform several more times in the future. He has since added several other roles to his repertoire, including the title roles in Rameau's Dardanus and Zoroastre, and also those of Jason in Charpentier's Medée and W.A. Mozart's Entführung aus dem Serail. In 2016, he founded the ensemble a nocte temporis, with which he has created several concerts and recordings.
